30th International Symposium on Social Work with Groups, AASWG
in cooperation with the 14th European Group Work Symposium
June 19-22, 2008 in Cologne, Germany   

The first international AASWG Group Work Symposium outside of the North
American continent took place in Cologne, Germany from June 19-22,
2008. 130 participants from 14 different countries (Barbados, Belgium,
Canada, England, France, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Japan,
Scotland, South Africa, USA and Switzerland) gathered at the
Kolpinghaus International in the center of Cologne to experience four
days of group work encounter.

For many attendants it was their first time to visit Germany, and the
30 members of AASWG’s German chapter who belonged to the symposium
planning group had worked hard to create a balance of professional
learning, intercultural encounter and group work at work. Participants
could visit 6 different social agencies and group work programs in
Cologne, choose to attend several of 28 partly bilingual workshops and
36 paper presentations, get to know “the German way of group work” as
well as global aspects of social group work, and they were invited to
celebrate a European midsummer night.

During the midsummer night party on Saturday evening, Sonia Abels, Paul
Ephross, Jeanne Gill and Joan K. Parry were recognized as AASWG’s
international honorees. This year’s local honorees were Delia Anton,
Karin Genius, Ingrun Masanek, Georg Nebel and Wolfgang Offermann.
Following the awards, symposium attendants danced late into the night.

During their time in Cologne group workers from around the world met
each other in person, enjoyed meals, conversations and activities
together, explored each other’s practice and theory base and expanded
their professional horizons in an atmosphere of acceptance, openness
and fun. Language barriers became less of a hindrance as human
connections were made. Thank you to the many people who helped to make
this possible.

Das erste internationale Groupwork Symposium der AASWG außerhalb
Nordamerikas fand vom 19.-22. Juni in Köln, Deutschland, statt. 130
TeilnehmerInnen aus 14 Ländern (Barbados, Belgien, Deutschland,
England, Frankreich, Iran, Irland, Israel, Japan, Kanada, Schottland,
Schweiz, Südafrika und USA) trafen sich im Kolpinghaus International im
Zentrum Kölns, um vier Tage lang Begegnungen mit Groupwork zu erleben.

Für viele TeilnehmerInnen war es der erste Besuch in Deutschland, und
die 30 Mitglieder des deutschen Chapters der AASWG, die das Symposium
vorbereiteten, hatten sich sehr darum bemüht, professionellem Lernen,
interkultureller Begegnung und gelebtem Group Work ausgewogen Raum zu
geben. SymposiumsteilnehmerInnen konnten 6 verschiedene soziale
Einrichtungen und Groupworkprogramme in Köln besuchen, zwischen
mehreren von 28 teilweise zweisprachigen Workshops und 36 Vorträgen
wählen und den „German Way of Group Work“ genauso wie globale Aspekte
sozialer Gruppenarbeit kennenlernen. Nicht zuletzt waren sie
eingeladen, eine europäische Mittsommernacht mitzufeiern.

Während der Mitsommernachtsparty am Samstag abend wurden Sonia Ables,
Paul Ephross, Jeanne Gill und Joan Parry von der internationalen AASWG
geehrt. Die lokalen Ehrungen wurden in diesem Jahr an Delia Anton,
Karin Genius, Ingrun Masanek, Georg Nebel und Wolfgang Offermann
verliehen. Im Anschluß an die Ehrungen tanzten die TeilnehmerInnen bis
tief in die Nacht.

Während ihres Aufenthalts in Köln begegneten sich GroupworkerInnen aus
aller Welt ganz persönlich, genossen gemeinsame Mahlzeiten, Gespräche
und Aktivitäten, erkundeten die Praxis und die theoretischen Fundamente
der anderen und erweiterten ihren professionellen Horizont in einer von
Akzeptanz, Offenheit und Spaß geprägten Atmosphäre. Menschliche
Verbindungen wurden geknüpft, so dass sprachliche Barrieren immer
weniger hinderlich waren. Danke an die vielen Menschen, die dies
möglich gemacht haben.
