REPORT FROM THE NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE TO THE AASWG MEMBERSHIP:  NOMINATIONS 2008

Members of the Nominations Committee:

The members of the Nominations Committee include: Ellen Sue Mesbur (chair), Marty Birnbaum, Maeda Galinsky, Alison Johnston, Joan Letendre and Linda McArdle..

Background Information for New Election Cycle

The change to a late spring/early summer symposium required us to make changes to the nominations cycle. Historically we recruit for board positions following the fall symposium, develop a slate in the winter/spring, present the slate at the June board meeting in New York, then prepare the ballots over the summer for an early fall election. The Executive Committee considered this new state of events, so that the election will be held in the early spring with the announcement at the spring/summer Annual Membership Meeting.

In order to help us manage the new cycle of symposia dates and maintain as much stability as possible, at the June 2007 meeting of the AASWG Board a motion was unanimously approved to maintain the Board membership as currently constituted and transition to a new elections structure. Therefore, no elections were held in the Fall of 2007. A final draft of the necessary By Laws revisions will be sent to the membership for approval in June 2008.

Members-at-Large Positions

The following members have greed to extend their terms for one year for the sake of smooth transition:  Ann Bergart, Cheryl Lee, and Alex Gitterman (2007/now 2008); Joan Letendre and Mark Doel (2008/now 2009); and Carol Cohen, Paul Johnson, and Lynne Mitchell (2009/now 2010).  Marcia Cohen has decided to end her term in June 2008. We thank everyone for their dedication and continuing commitment to AASWG.

President’s and Vice-President’s Position

Nancy Sullivan has graciously offered to extend her term until June 2009 (originally 2008). This is indeed good news for AASWG and we thank Nancy for her continued leadership.  Tim Kelly has agreed to extend his term until June 2008.  Tim has contributed enormously to AASWG for many years and we thank him for all he has done for AASWG.

Elections for June 2008

The committee is actively seeking candidates to consider for Vice-President and FOUR member-at-large positions on the Board.

We are looking for people who bring these leadership qualities:

·        Commitment to Board service;

·        Understanding of the diverse areas and different perspectives of social group work practice;

·        Ability to bring new ideas and a vision of social group work;

·        Acceptance of responsibility;

·        Demonstrated ability to follow through on responsibility taken;

·        Commitment to building social group work practice and education in their own communities;

·        Solid track record of responsibility taken at the Chapter, Community, and/or Professional Organizational levels. .

Board members are expected to:

·        Attend the symposium of the year in which they are nominated;

·        Assume responsibility for being a member of, or chairing, at least two committees of the Board;

·        Attend meetings of those committees at the June and fall meetings, and correspond with committee members {as required} during the year.

In addition to the leadership qualities, the Nominations Committee considers diversity qualifications such as ethnicity, gender, age, geographical representation and a balance between practitioners and academics. We will be developing our slate for the summer 2008 elections over the next few months and are seeking nominations now. Check out the AASWG website at: www.aaswg.org for further information. If you are interested, or if you know of people who would be interested, please contact the Chair of the Nominations Committee:
