Mark Smith

Mark S. Smith is a member of the faculty at Barry University School of Social Work. He earned his baccalaureate in Early Childhood Education from University of South Carolina, his MSW from San Francisco State University, and his doctorate in social work from Barry University. He is an assistant professor, whose teaching roles focus on human behavior and clinical practice, especially emphasizing social contructivist and group practice modalities. Before joining the faculty his professional practice experience included work in child development and welfare, hospital and community based health care settings, psychiatric and mental health, employee assistance programming, hospice and grief care, and community organizing. He maintains a small clinical private practice where he specializes in work with children, adolescents, and families, particularly helping individuals interested in transitioning from subjugated to preferred identities. Dr. Smith has published and presented numerous papers and workshops on his areas of expertise and interest which include: group work, family and community responses to disaster and trauma, LGBTQ youth and adults, narrative and constructivist clinical practice, qualitative and participant-based research, spiritual and insight-focused practice, and the effect of the internet on human behavior and on emerging notions about relationships and community. He is President of the Board of Directors for the Alliance for GLBTQ Youth in Miami/Dade, and Board Member of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups, an International Organization.
