Standards for Social Work Practice with Groups Commission on Group Work in Social Work Education |
Each year AASWG's hosts an international symposium. These Symposia are held in a different host city each year and feature numerous workshops, papers, special invitational sessions, and plenary addresses from group workers from across the globe. Click on a link below to find out about previous and future Symposia. Cologne, Germany June 19 – June 22, 2008 MENSCH. Online Registration and Payment PDF Registration Form for Postal Registration There is only one full registration fee this year as we wish to create a big group experience, a group work community for four days. The registration fee, therefore, includes all meals except the Friday night dine-around (i.e., includes Thursday and Saturday dinners and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday lunches. Breakfasts are included in the room price.) We budgeted the registration fee tightly to keep it reasonable. Therefore we don´t have extra rates for students or retirees this year but offer one relatively moderate fee for all members. Students can register as volunteers, pay only the price for symposium meals and give half a day´s worth of work. In return they get to participate in the full program and join in all meals. Make use of our early-bird registration fee and register by May 1 via Online Registration and Payment We are looking forward to hosting you in Koeln from June 19-22. We ask you to reserve a room at the Kolpinghaus soon by e-mail (hotel@kolpinghaus-international.com). Housing alternatives are listed on the AASWG website, but we really encourage you to stay at the Kolpinghaus, which will be entirely in AASWG´s hands if we manage to fill the 130 beds. Prices are 120€ for a double room (two twin beds) and 80€ for a single room (a single bed). To the double room a third bed can be added for the surcharge of 25€ . Make sure to mention AASWG to get this rate. The conference begins on Thursday afternoon with eight “outstitutes.” We invite all participants to explore social group work in a “hands-on” way in the field and visit agencies and programs in Cologne. These include typical German social work projects as well as very unique programs. The plenary sessions will all have an interactive character this year and will call on you as participants. Translation will be provided. Thursday night will be a joint venture of US and German members, defining group work in various ways. Saturday morning you´ll get to know the “German Way of Group Work.” Saturday evening is dedicated to our legendary group work cabaret, “Group Work On Stage,” followed by a splendid midsummer night party and dance (the highlight of each chapter conference for many German members!). Sunday´s closing plenary will draw conclusions and let us develop visions and perspectives. Friday will be the day of workshops. They last either 90 minutes (either in German or English without translation) or 180 minutes (with translation). Papers will be given in English only at our Paper (Af)fair on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We hope to have developed a cohesive conference atmosphere by then, after people had plenty of chances to interact and get to know each other during the plenaries, meals and in the workshops. The paper presentations will take place in a coffee-house type setting with opportunities to move from one table to another. We are aware that many of you may bring spouses and family members along to Cologne and travel together before or after the symposium. We cordially invite you and those accompanying you to discover some cultural highlights in and around Cologne in group work tours on Saturday afternoon. We have an extra committee preparing these trips. They include the visit of a local brewery as well as a walk through the famous cathedral or a tour to the synagogue. German chapter members will join you and guide you on these “outstitutes” of a different kind. We realise that for some members, coming to Germany is a big step in and of itself. The traumatic aftermath of the Holocaust runs deep to this day. On Saturday morning, we want to honor our human commonalities and roots in a spiritual gathering to contemplate the motto, MENSCH. We hope to encounter one another authentically and openly and to create spaces for healing and growth. To help deal with feelings of resentment and fear and to begin an exchange even before the symposium, Ann Bergart and Andrew Chiccetti have set up an online blog called “The Healing Forum.” We thank them for this courageous initiative. Please feel free to read and add your comments to it at http://theaaswgblog.blogspot.com We sincerely hope to welcome you in Cologne, Germany this June, and we look forward to four exciting days of inspiring professional exchange and human encounter. Ingrun Masanek, Symposium Co-Chair Social Group Work is all about MENSCHEN. When groups gather, grow and develop, each member changes as a MENSCH. Social Group work is all about focusing on and strengthening human resources. This symposium is about encounter: encountering MENSCHEN in their different cultures, relationships and concepts of reality. This symposium invites you to experience our various (group work) cultures, to explore commonalities and differences, to learn and to grow. Non-European residents who are thinking about going to the AASWG Symposium in Köln (Cologne) in June 2008 may learn a great deal by going to www.eurail.com and finding out about train travel, rail passes, hotels, and boat trips on many of Europe’s rivers, lakes, and other waterways. A variety of Eurailpasses are described on that website. They are not as expensive as purchasing point-to-point tickets and they come with enough literature to help trip planning. The Passes are not valid in Great Britain but BritRail links are on the Eurail website. Eurailpasses are valid from Sweden to Greece, northern Ireland to Romania and Bulgaria. If you didn’t do the trains of Europe in college, take the trips now with these Eurailpasses!
Below is a list of links to various German cities with wonderful things to do and see. Each website has an English Translation. Just look for the UK Flag icon or the word English on each webpage. You might want to start off by looking at the Cologne (Koeln) website
Rail Travel in Europe Trains across Europe - Getting a Eurail Pass is a great deal. You can get a pass for varying numbers of days of unlimited train travel within Germany or across Europe.
Future Symposia Illinois in 2009 2010??? Previous Symposia Jersey City, New Jersey - June 28, 2007 – July 1, 2007 Final Program: Groups: Gateways to Growth A gateway is an opening, something that serves as an entrance or provides access. A group can be a gateway, helping people experiencing stressful life events or conditions move towards health, well-being, social inclusion, and empowerment. This symposium will celebrate the ways in which groups facilitate growth for people by opening gates, removing barriers, providing resources, and providing safe spaces. Come to the Garden State and share in the rejuvenating power of groups with group workers from around the world.
